WHAT ’ S NEWS IN UPPER ST . CLAIR
UPPER ST . CLAIR-BETHEL PARK ROTARY BREAKFAST CLUB HOLIDAY PROJECTS
Salvation Army Bell Ringing
On Dec . 2 , the Upper St . Clair-Bethel Park Rotary Breakfast Club were out in force with at least 10 members ringing bells for the Salvation Army for over eight hours at one of the region ’ s busiest grocery stores . Some took the event to the next level by donning holiday hats , “ ugly ” Christmas sweaters , and even singing holiday carols and playing the kazoo as they greeted shoppers . And Dave and Susan Hicks , as well as Leigh Harkreader , shared their love of community service and volunteering by having their grandchildren by their side .
Stockings for Soldiers
This annual tradition has quickly grown to be one of the club ’ s favorite activities — stuffing treats and goodies into stockings for soldiers stationed overseas during the holiday season . Working in an organized assembly line , about three-quarters of the Upper St . Clair-Bethel Park Rotary membership worked side-by-side to stuff 50 stockings with items like microwave popcorn , cereal bars , trail mix , Slim Jims , dice , cards , gum and much more . “ It ’ s an amazing event ,” said club member Barb Breier . “ This is my first year organizing the effort and I ’ m hooked . My husband was a veteran and I ’ m so proud of the effort our club makes in support of our active military .” Working in pairs , the club zip-tied the stockings then dropped them off at Beinhauer Family Funeral Home in McMurray , which ships more than 500 stockings overseas each year .
THREE RIVERS QUILT SHOW COMING THIS APRIL
The geese will be flying all over southwestern PA ! No , it is not migration time for Canada geese , but the deadline is approaching for entries into the annual Three Rivers Quilt Show !
“ Flying Geese ” is the theme for the 2024 quilt show hosted by Three Rivers Quilters . It will be held at the Hollywood Casino at The Meadows April 11-13 . In addition to the theme category , there are at least 11 additional categories . The juried and judged show features more than 120 quilts , cash prizes , vendors , demonstrations , a quilter ’ s rummage sale and raffles .
Flying Geese quilt blocks are rectangular-shaped and are useful in many quilting designs ; even entire quilts can be made up of the handy little rectangles . They are always twice as wide as they are high and are made up of a central triangle with smaller triangles on either side .
Flying Geese blocks are believed to have originated in the USA in the 1860s . If you are familiar with theories about the Underground Railway , a Flying Geese quilt hung outside a home was said to be a sign for enslaved people to follow the flying geese to Canada and freedom . It ’ s also believed that the direction of the arrows indicated where runaway enslaved persons could find water , food , and shelter . Folklore or fact ? No definitive proof exists .
