The Future of Anti-Aging: Why Collagen Is Your Skin’ s Best Friend
“ Should I be taking a collagen supplement?” It’ s one of the most common questions I hear in my treatment room, and the answer isn’ t quite as simple as yes or no.
Collagen has become one of the biggest buzzwords in beauty and wellness. From powders and gummies to drinks and protein bars, everyone seems to be searching for the secret to younger-looking skin. But to understand how to protect skin— or better yet, regenerate it— we first need to understand what collagen actually is.
Think of collagen as the framework that gives your skin its strength, structure and elasticity. When we’ re young, our bodies produce collagen efficiently, keeping skin firm, smooth and resilient. Around our mid-20s, however, collagen production begins to slow. In fact, beginning around age 25, we produce approximately 1 % less collagen each year. As the years pass, and especially after menopause, we lose collagen more rapidly.
As collagen declines, it’ s not just wrinkles that appear. Skin becomes thinner, less elastic, and the underlying support of the face gradually weakens. These changes contribute to fine lines, skin laxity, changes in facial volume, and the gradual shift in facial contours that many people associate with aging.
So where do supplements fit in? When you consume collagen, your digestive system breaks it down into amino acids, which become building blocks your body can use wherever they’ re needed. While collagen supplements may help improve those building blocks, they don’ t tell your body to send collagen directly to your face. The bigger challenge isn’ t simply having collagen available; it’ s encouraging your body to produce more of its own, in the right places.
That’ s where modern aesthetic medicine has evolved.
Years ago, many treatments focused primarily on replacing volume. Today, many of our most exciting advances are designed to stimulate your body’ s own collagen production, helping improve skin quality, firmness, elasticity and overall facial support over time.
Different treatments stimulate collagen in different ways. Biostimulatory injectables— such as Sculptra ® and Radiesse ®— gradually encourage your body’ s natural collagen response. Regenerative treatments like PRP / PRF and EZ Gel harness your body’ s own healing processes to support tissue regeneration. Microneedling, radiofrequency microneedling, and many laser treatments create controlled stimulation within the skin, signaling the body to repair and rebuild collagen naturally.
Each treatment works differently, which is why there is no single“ best” option. The right recommendation depends on your anatomy, skin quality, goals, lifestyle and timeline.

Of course, aesthetic treatments are only one piece of the equation. Healthy collagen also depends on daily habits. Consistent sun protection remains one of the most effective ways to preserve collagen, while adequate protein, vitamin C, quality sleep and avoiding tobacco all help support your skin’ s natural repair processes. When I think about the future of anti-aging, I don’ t think about chasing wrinkles or trying to look 20 forever. I think about protecting what you have, preserving it for as long as possible, and rebuilding what time naturally takes away.
The future of aesthetic medicine isn’ t about changing who you are— it’ s about helping your body age as beautifully and naturally as possible.
