Dear South Fayette Township School District Families and Community Members:

Dear South Fayette Parents, Families, and Community Members:
Humanitarian Albert Schweitzer said,“ Seek always to do some good, somewhere … Even if it is a little
thing, so something for those that need help. Something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.” Fall is a time of year for reflection, gratitude, and thanks.
As we reflect upon the beginning of this 2017-2018 school year, The South Fayette Township School District expresses thankful appreciation to all for a wonderful start to the year. Realization of our 2017-2018 Operational Plan Theme,“ Ingenuity and Flexibility,” is enthusiastically taking shape in grades K-12.
succeed in their future pathway choices. We introduce our students to the motivational Habits of Mind Dispositions( Dr. Art Costa and Dr. Bena Kallick( www. habitsofmindinstitute. org) such as, but not limited to the following examples:“ Questioning and Problem Posing; Perseverance; Reflection; Taking Responsible Risks; and, Thinking and Communicating with Clarity and Precision.”

An exciting example of“ Ingenuity and Flexibility” in action recently occurred as South Fayette students participated in the New York and Pittsburgh Maker Faires held in September and October. The New York opportunity occurred based on our students’ first place entry into the Digital Promise filmMAKER Award garnered through teacher Jim Hausman’ s South Fayette High School English / Humanities class. This real-world learning experience fostered student engagement in Project-Based Learning through the arts and humanities and signifies the importance of the“ A” in STEAM, thus reinforcing that STEAM crosses ALL content areas and is not limited to the sciences and mathematics. outh Fayette

As WESA states:
“ To help tackle this issue, a group of local high school students created a new device. Most prescriptions come in the familiar, orange canisters. Unfortunately, these are flawed: patients can take too many pills, too frequently and other people can get into the containers very easily.”
For last year’ s Pennsylvania Governor’ s STEM Competition, a team of students at South Fayette High School was tasked with designing a device that could help address a problem being faced by Pennsylvanians.
Michael Kugler, a senior who served as the lead engineer on the project, said that, with the opioid crisis in mind, the team saw plenty of room for improvement in the traditional pill canisters.
