STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO SELECT AT LEAST ONE (1/2 CUP) SERVING OF FRUIT OR VEGETABLE TO QUALIFY AS A “MEAL.” Grains served are required to be whole grains. Lunches and snacks need to meet the “Nutrition Standards for Competitive Foods in Schools” mandate meeting guidelines for calories, fat, and sodium. Changes also included only offering fat-free, fat-free flavored, skim, and 1% milk. This eliminated the 2% and whole homogenized milk and affected the size of the beverage, calorie, and nutritional content, portion sizes and all a la carte food/ beverage items. WHO ARE THE PEOPLE SERVING THE LUNCHES? The lunch staff consists of our very own community members. Many moms, aunts, and dads make up our team of approximately 35 staff members from the community. A lot of our staff started here years ago when their own children attended South Fayette. Many have been here for more than 15 years. They attend training, are very professional, and are great at what they do. HEARTLAND ONLIN
