SOUTH HILLS SENIOR SOFTBALL LOOKING FOR MEMBERS The South Hills Senior Softball League registration has been open for this season. The league is for players 55 years old and up. (Players who are 54 can join at any time during the year they turn 55.) Information and forms for registration are on the website at seniorsoftballleague.com. The league holds practices and games through August or early September at fields in South Park and elsewhere in the South Hills. “You’ll feel like a kid again when you play,” says Doug Houston, commissioner of the nonprofit group. “The average player is about 66, and our softball rules are age- appropriate.” Players are chosen for teams each spring in a draft, ensuring that talent is spread more or less evenly among the teams. The league holds a catered picnic at the end of each season. Players come from all over the area, including Baldwin, Bethel Park, Bridgeville, Carnegie, Castle Shannon, Chartiers Valley, Dormont, Mt. Lebanon, Peters Township, South Park, Upper St. Clair, Whitehall and others. TROOP 36713 DONATES THERAPY CAT TO COUNTRY MEADOWS Girl Scouts from Troop 36713 in Bethel Park presented a special gift and visit with residents living with Alzheimer’s disease at Country Meadows Retirement Communities in Bridgeville. Comprised of girls in the third grade, the troop used proceeds from the sale of Girl Scout cookies to purchase a stuffed therapy cat for Country Meadows residents. In addition to the donation, the scouts interacted with residents and learned about dementia in an age-appropriate conversation based on Country Meadows’ activity book for children, “The Unforgettable Adventures of Grandma’s Cape.” The therapy cat donation idea began when the troop leader, who is a hospice nurse by profession, noticed Country Meadows residents interacting with a stuffed therapy cat. Why a stuffed therapy cat? Animal therapy is an excellent way to boost mood and calm agitation in people with dementia. While Country Meadows is a pet-friendly retirement community, and therapy animals routinely visit all residents, including those living with dementia, a robotic cat provides numerous benefits without the issues involved in caring for a live animal. Studies show the benefits of stuffed pets include increased happiness, reduced agitation and anxiety, and increased engagement through playing and talking with the stuffed animal, providing a sense of purpose and happy memories of previous pets. 8 724.942.0940 TO ADVERTISE ❘ icmags.com JOIN MT.
