WHAT’ S NEWS IN SOUTH FAYETTE
ALLEGHENY LAND TRUST PROTECTS 42 ACRES ALONG THE PANHANDLE TRAIL
Allegheny Land Trust( ALT) has permanently protected 42 acres of green space along the Panhandle Trail in South Fayette Township, marking a major milestone in its Panhandle Greenway Conservation Project.
With this acquisition, ALT has now conserved 293 acres along the corridor— 202 acres in South Fayette and 91 acres in Collier Township— preserving vital forests, fields, and waterways in a rapidly developing area.
The newly protected land supports the Robinson Run Watershed, helps manage stormwater and flooding, improves air quality, and provides important wildlife habitat. It also enhances the trail experience by offering shaded, scenic surroundings for walkers, runners, and cyclists.
The Panhandle Greenway project aims to connect major parks and trail systems— including Settlers Cabin Park, the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, and the Panhandle and Montour trails— into a continuous green corridor.
Funding for this latest conservation effort came from several foundations, local businesses, and community supporters, highlighting the power of collective action in protecting the region’ s natural landscape.
