Although winter has
brought about much
unpredictability
Dr. Ken Lockette
with temperatures
Superintendent of Schools
and snow, the South
Fayette Township
School District continues to be predictable with celebrating
success across the board with academics, arts, and athletics.
During the fall and winter sports seasons, the majority of our
teams qualified for the playoffs, with football and cross country
earning WPIAL championships. Our music and arts students
have also garnered continued success with Pennsylvania
Music Education Association adjudications and Scholastic Art
and Writing Awards. Additionally, our band, orchestra, and
chorus students have performed on and off campus at various
venues, and South Fayette will present musical productions
this spring in our middle school (Rock of Ages - Middle School
Edition) and high school (The Wedding Singer), providing more
opportunities to display the talents and skills of our students.
Academically, we had a student qualify
as a National Merit Scholar and another
student placing first in the SkillsUSA
district competition in the Health
Assistant Program through the Parkway
West Career and Technology Center, who
will represent South Fayette in the state
competition in April. In addition, for the
second year in a row, South Fayette took first place in the FBI
H.O.P.E. Initiative Video Contest to combat the heroin epidemic.
CS/STEM
Also recently announced,
South Fayette was awarded
a PA Smart Grant to further
develop our K-8 Computer Science (CS)/STEM pathway. As
part of the grant, South Fayette will work with seven other
regional school districts and researchers from the University of
Pittsburgh and Clemson University to develop a PA statewide
online education platform for teaching introductory CS/STEM
education across grades K-8; to co-create introductory CS/
STEM curricula, assessments, and professional development;
and to develop a cyclical feedback loop to support quality
implementation.

SOUTH FAYETTE
Even though the District has had continued success in multiple
realms, we have not rested on our laurels. We know that our
students’ potential for creativity and innovation depends on
the foundation of literacy and numeracy that has long been
the promise of American public education. We also know that
a modern education must go further and do more than ever
before. Because of this, South Fayette has fully engaged in the
strategic planning process since the summer to further improve
and reach the next level.
The strategic planning process has gone through several
stages and has included feedback and input from multiple
stakeholders through research, surveys, focus groups,
discussions, and stakeholder design thinking sessions. The
District will roll out the new plan this spring that is designed to
be the blueprint for the next three years, beginning in the 2019-
2020 school year.
As temperatures begin to thaw in the region, leading to
the spring and summer, we are committed to continue to
provide relevant learning opportunities and to develop our
programming to personally grow all students in our district. In
doing so, we will continue to build on our legacy of “Tradition,
Pride & Excellence.”
