amount of time sitting throughout the day.“ I am now trying to incorporate more purposeful movement within my classes to help break up the day a bit,” she said. Using a grant, she invested in flexible seating in her classroom and more“ options for students who would prefer to stand during instruction as an alternative to sitting all day.”
Changing Times For many participants, the exercise also sparked reflection on how the student experience has evolved over time. Technology, in particular, has transformed how students access information, organize their work, and receive feedback.“ I think it’ s easier to be a student now in regards to accessing information through Canvas and PowerSchool. Everything is there to be reviewed and accessed when needed,” said Mr. Bacco.
At the same time, educators acknowledged that technology produces new academic challenges, especially in regard to attention span and the pace of learning.
“ Students are learning much more sophisticated concepts in much less time,” observed Mrs. Tupper. She added how impressed she is that the students are able to achieve high levels of success despite living in“ a world now that is FULL of distractions.”
A Lasting Impact
Ultimately,“ Shadow a Lion Learner” is creating connections both between educators and students, and between intention and practice. Taking the time to truly understand the student experience, South Fayette educators are reaffirming their commitment to being student-centered by meeting students where they are and continuously improving the learning environment. When educators walk alongside students, even for just a day, it can have a profound impact in our schools for years to come.
Congratulations South Fayette Class of 2026
South Fayette Township School District celebrated the graduation of 267 seniors during its 98th Commencement Ceremony on Friday, June 5, at the Stadium. Superintendent Dr. Michelle Miller joined High School administrators Dr. Natasha Dirda, Mr. T. J. Salopek, and Mrs. Tonya O ' Brien in congratulating the Class of 2026 with opening remarks and recognitions prior to the distribution of diplomas.
Graduates and their families heard inspiring remarks from selected student speakers Malak Saeed, Paige Deklewa, and Zayan Karim, who reflected on their shared experiences, lifelong friendships, and the opportunities that await beyond South Fayette. The Class of 2026 selected Mr. Shawn McArdle as the faculty speaker, and he encouraged graduates to appreciate the people who shape their personal stories, thanking the class for becoming an important part of his own.
The ceremony also featured a performance of Time to Rise by the Vocal Point Select Choir, directed by Ms. Christine Elek. Senior Aanya Angadi introduced her original artwork, chosen by her classmates as the Class of 2026 Lion Hall contribution. One of the evening ' s most meaningful traditions continued as several district employees had the honor of presenting diplomas to their own children. Following the final diploma presentation, Student Government President MacKenzie Concannon led the graduates in tossing their caps.
The Class of 2026 distinguished itself through exceptional academic achievement. The top 10 graduates, listed alphabetically, were Arnav Chaturvedi, Zayan Karim, Mohamed Khalil, Quinn Leroux, Yuhan Luo, Dan Mano, Aesha Mehta, Arya Pamecha, Kevin Wang, and Hannah Yeh. In total, 189 graduates earned honors or higher, including 24 % graduating with Honors, 18 % with High Honors, and 29 % with Highest Honors.
Thank you to all who attended and participated in this memorable evening. The district is incredibly proud of its Class of 2026 and congratulates them as they begin the next chapter of their journeys.
