“ We are a 10-barrel brew house with lots of capacity to spare ,” Williams said . “ We have 20 taps and 18 of them are used for the beers that we brew . The last two are for our made from scratch tropical cocktails . We ’ re the only brewery in Pennsylvania with cocktails on tap .”

Style-wise , Mastic Trail ’ s range of beers is broad and accessible to a wide range of tastes . Choosing not to focus on run of the mill IPAs , Williams said his brewmaster Barrett Goddard comes up with flavors that circle the globe .

“ Barrett ’ s a very accomplish brewer . He has been brewing professionally for over 20 years and has worked for several breweries around the area , most notably Full Pint Brewing .” He ’ s also a Bucknell grad with a degree in chemical engineering ,” Williams said . “ His favorite beers are traditional styles like pilsners , weizens , and Belgians , so we have a large representation of beers from around the world . Our Hefeweizen is just like you ’ d find in Munich in the summertime . It has hints of banana and

clove , which is solely a product of the yeast . We don ’ t add any spices to it . We offer a wide variety of year-round beers ranging from golden beers all the way to black stouts . We make seasonal beers and special brews as well . And we always have our simcoe hops-based Davy Jones ’ Locker double IPA on tap year round .”

Other unique offerings include their Surfin ’ Moose , which celebrates Mastic Trail ’ s location inside the old North Hills Moose lodge . The Moose still meet at the building and a percentage of every sale of Surfin ’ Moose is donated back to them .

“ Surfin ’ Moose is an easy drinking blond ale ,” Williams said . “ If someone is used to Miller Light or IC Light , it ’ s a logical stepping stone into our craft beers . It appeals to both light beer drinkers and craft beer drinkers alike .”

Mastic Trail also created what could arguably be one of the first book tie-in beers with their Jake Sullivan Caribbean Lager , which is a Mexican lager based on the Jake Sullivan series of books written by local author Chip Bell . “ Sullivan solves mysteries in the Caribbean islands , so the connection to the Caribbean-themed Mastic Trail is natural ,” Williams said . Chip has now done two well-attended book signings at the brewpub .

With such a variety , Mastic Trail offers customers beer flights , where you can sample four beers at a time , served on a surfboard , of course . They also offer growlers , crowlers and four-packs to go so you can take your favorite brews home with you to enjoy later .

But you ’ ll likely want to enjoy them inside Mastic Trail , where all of the brewing is integrated into the airy

taproom and open to the public . The shiny stainless steel kettles are literally where your pint originates just weeks before it hits your lips .

“ It ’ s a unique experience ,” Williams said . “ In a lot of places , you never get to see the brewing equipment , or it ’ s behind glass . We seat people in the brewing area occasionally , and it ’ s very popular . Guests also love to come here for birthday parties since we can easily accommodate large groups . We do private events and are booking holiday parties now .”

Mastic Trail Brewing is a member of the Pittsburgh Brewers Guild and is part of the Guild ’ s Allegheny River Trail . The brewery has lots of parking , and getting there is easy – just 4 minutes from the Butler Street exit off Route 28 .
