Shaler Area senior named Semifinalist in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program
Shaler Area School District is proud to recognize senior Maggie Rea as being named a Semifinalist in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program .
Shaler Area High School superintendent Dr . Sean Aiken and principal Dr . Timothy Royall recently recognized Maggie Rea for her achievement .
Maggie is the vice president of the National Honor Society and a member of the Japanese National Honor Society and high school science club . She is involved in the stage crew for the high school ’ s plays and musicals , and this year is a member of the cast for the high school ’ s performance of “ A Midsummer Night ’ s Dream .” Outside of school , she is active in local church youth groups , Bible studies , and mission work . She plans to continue her academic career at a 4-year university after graduation .
As one of approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide being recognized for their academic talent , Maggie has the opportunity to advance in the competition for an opportunity to be awarded a National Merit Scholarship . High school juniors entered the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test ( PSAT / NMSQT ), which served as an initial screen of program entrants . The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than 1 percent of U . S . high school seniors .
Shaler Area student raised $ 900 for Project HOPE
Inspired by a middle school class , one Shaler Area student set out to make a difference .
Over the summer , Kaysia Chelli , a current freshman , raised $ 900 through a community bake sale to benefit Project HOPE , a global health and humanitarian organization , which has been supporting COVID-19 relief efforts .
Last spring , Kaysia envisioned the project during her Innovations class at Shaler Area Middle School . Innovations is a full-year , 8th-grade course , which provides students with opportunities to engage in solving real-world problems through project-based learning . Kaysia met with Shaler North Hills Library staff to coordinate a bake sale to take place during the library ’ s Annual Car Cruise in August . Kaysia spent the summer recruiting volunteers and donations to turn her vision into a reality with great success !
Three seniors named Commended Students in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program
Shaler Area School District is proud to announce three seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program .
Shaler Area High School superintendent Dr . Sean Aiken and principal Dr . Timothy Royall presented Aidan Brophy , Asher King , and Madeline Turner with a letter of
commendation from Shaler Area High School and National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their achievement .
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise . Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2022 competition by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test ( PSAT / NMSQT ).
Aidan Brophy is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta math honor society , as well as a member of the high school ’ s Science Club . He is a student athlete on the Shaler Area Varsity Swimming and Diving team and works as a lifeguard
at Shaler Area Elementary School pool . Aidan plans to continue his academic career at a university to study digital narrative and interactive design or history .
Asher King is a member of the National Spanish Honor Society and volunteers his time outside of school to tutor students and work at the Squirrel Hill Food Pantry . He also enjoys musical pursuits including bass guitar and vocals . Asher plans to pursue a major in computer science .
Madeline Turner plays baritone in the Shaler Area Fightin ’ Titan Marching Band and is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta math honor society , French Honor Society , and Tri-M Music Honor Society . Outside of school , she works at Dunkin . Madeline plans to attend Carnegie Mellon University next year to major in linguistics .
