live 24” Fraser fi r wreath (provided by mcTighe’s
Garden Center) for the holidays! We provide
the wreath and decorations, you provide the

The NEA (National Endowment for the
Arts) Big Read is being celebrated in
Pittsburgh!
SnHL is pleased to partner with Prime Stage
Theatre for the Big read 2019! The featured
book will be in the Time of the Butterfl ies by
Julia alverez. activities include:
• In the Time of the Butterfl ies Book Discussions -
Monday, January 14 at 6:30 PM and Thursday,
January 25 at 2:00 PM. Dominican coff ee from
Ms. Alverez’s coff ee plantation will be served (now
Vermont Coff ee Company).
• Food for Thought Group will host Dominican
recipes on Wednesday, January 16 at 6:30 PM
• Movie Viewing (Date TBA). Come watch the
movie version of the book, starring Salma Hayek
and Edward James Olmos.
• Carnaval! NEA Big Read – Sunday, February
3 from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. The Friends of SNHL
welcome all residents to enjoy the customs and
culture of the Dominican Republic.
• Illustrated Wisdom Workshop – Friday, March
15 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Artist and author Sandra

Gould Ford will present this expressive workshop for
adults using arts materials like crayons, markers,
paints, pencils and glitter in creating unique images
and special messages. Ms. Ford has taught for
over 25 years and found that art helps transfer
feelings, insights and profound wisdom from the
subconscious to our awake and logical minds.
• Shaler Area Pelliza! (Date TBA) Community
members are invited to create your own version
of a Dominican Republic “pelliza” (rugs/tapestry
made of worn fabric) to be displayed at the library
in March.

Come beat the winter blues by playing mini-
golf in the Library stacks at a great price! Our
fantastic mini golf holes feature great designs
by our community members.

Monday February 18 from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM
For kids and families (kids under 12 should be
accompanied by an adult).
• Mini Golf in the Library for Teens -
Saturday, February 16 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM
Putter through the library stacks and help the
library!
• “Adopt-a-hole!” We are seeking folks to create
a hole for our Caddy Stacks Mini Golf course. Last
year families, Friends of the Library, and individuals
created awesome, fun golf holes that were easy to
make using materials around the house. And would
