Shaler Area Students Take Top Honors in Japanese Speech Contest
Shaler Area School District is proud to announce three high school students placed in the most advanced category of the 2016 High School Japanese Speech Contest.
The 2016 High School Japanese Speech Contest is an annual competition hosted by the Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania( JASP) and the University of Pittsburgh’ s Asian Studies Center for which students are required to speak on a chosen topic and then judged on their oral presentation.
In the Advanced Plus Level, the highest and most competitive category, Shaler Area senior Nick Harn, took first place, senior Zach Hughes received second place and senior Nick DeBortoli received third place. Nick Harn, who also was named the grand prize winner, received an electronic Japanese-English dictionary donated by the Consulate General of Japan in New York.
This year 110 students from Western Pennsylvania registered to compete in the daylong competition. Japanese language students of all levels and students who are involved in Japanrelated cultural activities participated in one of four speech levels( beginner, intermediate, advanced and advanced plus) or the poster contest.
Shaler Area Staff vs. Pittsburgh Steelers in Fundraising Basketball Game
The Pittsburgh Steelers stepped off the gridiron and onto the basketball court at Shaler Area for a good cause- to help the students.
The Steelers basketball game is the all-district fundraising event that pits the football team players against Shaler Area School District faculty. The event is part of the annual effort by the Shaler Area parent-teacher organizations to create a fun night out for Shaler Area families and raise money to benefit the students.
The event was held on Friday, Apr. 22 at the Shaler Area High School gym A. Doors opened at 6 p. m. and the event started at 6:30 p. m. with food available for purchase, a bake sale, raffles and auctions. The basketball game began at 8 p. m. and there were opportunities to meet the players and receive autographs during halftime.
Food and monetary donations for the Shaler Area Backpack Initiative were also collected.
