PITTSBURGH PHILHARMONIC
CELEBRATES 40 YEARS
The Pittsburgh Philharmonic celebrated its 40th anniversary
in a grand and lively style on May 20 and 21 with an all-Russian
program featuring Glinka’s Ruslan & Lyudmila Overture,
Glazunov’s Violin Concerto, selections from Stravinski’s Firebird
and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture. The orchestra’s
May 20 performance took place at Butler County Community
College’s Succop Theater and the May 21 concert was held in
Scotus Hall at Mt. Alvernia.
The Pittsburgh Philharmonic is southwestern PA’s premier
volunteer orchestra. Approximately 70 musicians from throughout
the tri-state area, ranging in age from 15 to 80, perform great works
of classical music at various venues in the region. Members of the
orchestra include business executives, retirees, students, teachers
and other professionals—some who have been performing with
the Philharmonic for over 20 years, several who teach or play
music professionally, and some who have advanced music degrees.
The Pittsburgh Philharmonic’s music director is Edward
Leonard and the orchestra performs four times throughout the
year, often featuring local soloists and composers. “With all the
different venues we have, we do make an effort to bring great
classical music to the people of Pittsburgh,” says Curt Miller,
member of the Philharmonic’s board of directors.
Future plans include making an effort to work closely with
various high school musical and choral groups in upcoming
seasons.
