LATEST NEWS FROM ST. URSULA SCHOOL
• Students from St. Ursula School joined in the Science Olympiad on Mar. 16 at California University against 17 other middle schools. Seventh and eighth graders participated in a variety of challenges that were well-balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics and technology. They also competed in events requiring knowledge of science concepts, process skills and science applications. Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of team events, which students prepare for during the year and then present at the competition. Students, with the help of advisor Mary Heyl, prepared bottle rockets, a scrambler car, an elastic launch glider, a“ Rube Goldberg” and more.
• The final regular Forensics tournament was held on Saturday, Mar. 5, at Butler Catholic. St. Ursula’ s students brought home lots of ribbons and medals! Hannah Valenty, Joseph Valenty, Anna Norman and Adam Larson placed second in their categories. Faith Benson, Alaina Fisher and Liam Shields placed first and received medals for their efforts.
• Congratulations to Mia White and Valeria Vasquez who were chosen to play in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association( PMEA) concert at Hampton High School with 100 other fifth and sixth graders from the county.
• Two St. Ursula students were presented with certificates as classroom winners in the 25th Annual Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest. Their entries will join thousands of other entries from across the nation at the state and national levels. Congratulations to third grade winner Martina Saldamarco and fourth grader winner Cassidy Horgan.
• Over 100 musicians joined together for the 34th annual Northern Area Diocesan Honors Band concert at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. Students chosen from St. Ursula’ s were sixth grader Adam Larson( trombone), seventh grader Maya Bianco( clarinet), eighth grader Anna Norman( saxophone), and eighth grader Hannah Valenty( trombone). A special thank-you to their teacher, Susan Chambers, for her talent to teach each student an instrument of their choosing beginning in fourth grade.
AQUINAS ACADEMY STUDENTS EARN AWARDS AT PJAS COMPETITION
Aquinas Academy middle and high school students recently competed in the Region 7 Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science( PJAS) competition at Duquesne University. Fifteen students earned awards:
High School— First Place: John Reed( Mars), Katie O’ Connell( Natrona Heights), Christina Koman( Ross); Second Place: Luke Lynch( Richland).
Middle School— First Place: Scarlett Hudson( Sewickley), Sophia Henry( Aspinwall), Susan Meland( Shaler); Second Place: Lena Sharara( Pittsburgh), Annamarie Hart( Aspinwall), Catherine Cable( Treesdale), Paige Indovina( Treesdale), Catherine Richthammer( Hampton), Lillian Ebeling-Koning( Hampton), Emma Kunzmann( McCandless); Third Place: Nathaniel Jernigan( Sewickley).
Three students were given special awards: Christina Koman received the Bechtel Award, John Reed received $ 100 from the American Nuclear Society- Pittsburgh Section, and Scarlett Hudson received the Award for Excellence in Chemistry and Biochemistry.

SHALER GARDEN CLUB IS IN FULL BLOOM WITH UPCOMING EVENTS
• Children’ s Fairy House Workshop will take place at the Shaler North Hills Library on Friday, June 17, from 7 to 8:30 p. m. Children ages 4 through 8 and their parents can learn how to create magical fairy houses in the gardens surrounding the library. Register for the workshop at the library.
• Shaler Garden Tour— Gardens in Shaler and surrounding communities will be featured on the Shaler Garden Club’ s annual tour that will take place on Sunday, June 26, from 11 a. m. to 3 p. m. Tickets can be purchased at the Shaler North Hills Library.
• Great Gardens Contest— This contest is open to Shaler residents and residents of the surrounding communities. All types of gardens will be considered. Entries will be judged on design, use of space, line, color and texture. Applications can be picked up at the Shaler North Hills Library. The deadline for submission is July 11. Winners will be announced at the Tuesday, July 26, Shaler Garden Club meeting to be held at the Shaler North Hills Library at 7 p. m. Applications are available at the Shaler North Hills Library.
•“ Deer, Rabbits and Groundhogs, Oh My!”— Doug Oster will be the guest speaker at the July 26 meeting of the Shaler Garden Club to be held at the Shaler North Hills Library at 7 p. m. The public is welcome!
