It ’ s Pittsburgh . It ’ s winter . It ’ s gray and cold outside . Want to get away to the Caribbean islands and warm up a little without climbing aboard a plane ? You can do this by visiting Mastic Trail Brewing in Shaler ! Mastic Trail provides a Caribbean getaway guest experience with its craft beers , signature tropical cocktails , tasty food menu ( not bar food ), and friendly service . The cuisine is very approachable , with customer favorites such as the Cubano sandwich , butterflied coconut-encrusted shrimp , and a house-brewed beer-battered fish sandwich .
In January 2020 , Pittsburgh native Ben Williams began converting the former Moose Lodge on Saxonburg Boulevard into something truly unique . It may be the only Caribbean-themed brewpub in the continental U . S . Then COVID-19 hit in March … truly terrible timing ! The renovation work continued , and the business opened in early July 2020 .
Mastic Trail offers a diverse craft beer lineup that is brewed on-site by talented brew master Barrett Goddard . Says Williams , “ There ’ s nothing else like this in Pittsburgh or the rest of the country where you have a craft brewery with a renowned brew master , a game room with an epoxy floor that looks like an oceanfront and a beach , an open and airy taproom , scratch-made
cocktails , and a commitment to the environment and sustainability .”
Mastic Trail doesn ’ t use any single-use plastics . The drink stirrers are made of a compostable corn material , and the straws are made of paper . Toilet paper and paper towels with pre- and post-consumer content are utilized . Paper , cardboard , glass , aluminum , metal , and plastic containers are all recycled . The brewery has partnered with the Zero Waste Wrangler to compost kitchen scraps , table
scraps , paper towels , and spent grains at a commercial composting facility . When possible , spent grains are provided as feed to a local hog farm . Plans are underway to install native plantings on the property to establish a pollinator garden . Sustainability is a key company value , and it has adopted the slogan “ Drink Locally , Think Globally , Dream Tropically ” to reflect this value . As Director of Sustainability Julia Meredith says , “ None of us can do everything ( to aid the environment ), but all of us can do something .”
Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurants is an organization that supports and champions local restaurants that are serious about their impact on people and the environment . In order to join the community of Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurants , a restaurant
must complete an online performance assessment that evaluates how socially and environmentally responsible it is through current business practices . This assessment consists of 149 sustainable actions from seven broad areas of focus : general , waste reduction , water conservation , energy efficiency , people , responsible sourcing , and nutrition . There are four levels of Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant designation – Bronze , Silver , Gold , or Platinum , and Mastic Trail is awaiting certification in the Gold category .
