Beattie Career Center (AWBCC) has been providing career exploration to elementary schools for the past three years as part of the school’s career readiness plan. AWBCC students and staff visited Shaler Area Elementary School this past October to provide hands-on experience to fifth grade students in nine career fields. Students were able to rotate through 45-minute sessions that included Emergency Response Technology, Veterinary Science Technology, Health and Dental Science, Automotive Collision Repair, Computer Repair and Programming, Sports Medicine, Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing, Science Technology and Cosmetology. Each session consisted of a five-minute career overview and two to three hands-on activities using the equipment from the field. Fifth graders were able to learn about routine veterinary exams, program a humanoid robot, use a virtual welder and painter, work on strength training, style hair, solve a crime, examine brain structures and learn how to backboard an injured person. The career sessions were led by students who are attending AWBCC, providing leadership opportunities for those students. Your Team: (Front) Shannon Sacca, Esq., Reid Roberts, Esq.
