SHALER NORTH HILLS LIBRARY Celebrating 75 Years Of Service To The Community 1942-2017

Our History … and Moving Forward On a cold wintry afternoon in early December 1941, ground was broken for a new community library to serve the North Hills. Of course, December 7, 1941 went on to become one of the most remembered days in American history. After some soul-searching as to whether the community could support a new library during wartime, construction moved forward and the North Hills Library opened its doors on September 27, 1942 with 3,000 books. Known as Shaler North Hills Library since 1981, the sturdy red brick colonial-style building, graced with several additions, has been a fixture on Mt. Royal Boulevard and a center of community activities in the heart of Shaler Township ever since. The Library became a member of the Allegheny County Library Association in 1996, sharing resources and services throughout the county.
Today your library offers award-winning programming, high speed Internet access, outstanding service, and a 130,000- strong collection of materials(“ Books and So Much More”) to suit the needs and tastes of folks from birth to 100 – all free with your library card! Visit the library in person or see the library conducting outreach in the community.
Celebrating 75 Years Community members were invited to create a design that answered the question: Why do you love the Shaler North Hills Library? There were over 50 entries, and our people’ s choice winner was 11-year old Claire, a very talented young lady!
“ Eyewitness to History: World War II”
Thanks to space provided by the Shaler Area Middle School, 250 visitors attended the Birthday Kickoff Event, commemorating the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Organized by The Senator John Heinz History Center, panelists Warren Goss & Tom Wiley( World War II Veterans) and Bob Taylor & Pat Evey( Home front Veterans) shared their real-life stories. VFW Post # 9199 and Vietnam Veterans presented colors and escorted our veterans, and local artists showed their Remembrance Art. Our public library is a reminder of the freedom for which the greatest generation sacrificed so much.
