Yard waste includes: leaves, garden residue, shrubbery with no dirt attached, limbs, twigs, brush and tree trimmings, and similar items, but does not include grass clippings and mulch.

In accordance with the Consent Order Agreement between Shaler Township and the Allegheny County Health Department and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency, the Township is required to conduct a source reduction study and complete flow reduction projects. The goal is to reduce the infiltration of storm water into the sanitary sewer system that flows to the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority( ALCOSAN) collection system for treatment.

We have identified multiple projects as flow reduction candidates and are pleased to announce that three major sewer lining projects have been awarded grants through ALCOSAN’ s Green Revitalization of Our Waterways( GROW) program. The total estimated project cost of these projects is over $ 800,000. GROW grants will fund over $ 550,000 of the project costs. Shaler Township would like to thank ALCOSAN for their assistance in achieving our flow reduction goals.

Yard waste must be placed in a bio-degradable paper bag. Tree trimmings not to exceed 3-inches in diameter. Brush, limbs, twigs and shrubbery must be bundled in lengths not to exceed 4 feet in length and 1 foot total diameter.
