Shaler Area senior named
2019 PSMLA Global
Scholars Graduate
Shaler Area senior Kayleigh Hegerle has
been named a 2019 Global Scholar through
the Pennsylvania State Modern Language
Association Global Scholars Program.
The PSMLA Global Scholars Program parallels
programs in other states and is designed
for students to complete over a four-year
period. The PSMLA Global Scholars Program
is completing its fourth year in the state of
Pennsylvania.
The Global Scholars Program provides high
school students the opportunity to develop
global awareness and competency through
the completion of interdisciplinary studies and
activities over the course of their high school
career. Over four years, students must complete
requirements in four components: academic
courses (four years or the equivalent of the same
world language and an additional four credits of
study in courses that are global in nature), active
participation in four extra-curricular activities
that focus on global aspects, a minimum of 20
hours of community service with a global focus,
and a minimum of eight literature or media
reviews, including at least four books.
Kayleigh Hegerle has always been interested
in the humanities and global studies and was
excited by the challenge of completing the
requirements for the Global Scholars program.
“It felt good to have a focus in my studies,”
says Hegerle, who plans to attend Nazareth
College, in Pittsford, N.Y., to major in history and
museum studies with a minor in French. “The
different courses opened a lot of doors in terms
of global studies.”
Hegerle was able to complete all of the
program requirements through her coursework
at Shaler Area High School, participation in the
History Club and French Honor Society, a field
trip to the United States Holocaust Memorial
Museum, a three-week study abroad trip to
France and independent work.
She received a special cord to wear at
commencement on June 7.
