Shaler Celebrates
Community Day
Shaler Community Day is an annual
celebration held on the 4th of July at Kiwanis
Park for friends and neighbors of all ages. It
has been a community staple for more than 40
years.
What began as a gathering on the 4th of July
at Kiwanis Park to enjoy fireworks has turned
into a time to celebrate the community at large
with family and friends.
Each year, the event includes food vendors,
children’s activities, a community tent with
business and organization booths, a DJ.,
fire truck rides and the Jane Neely 5K race.
Crawford Pool is also open 12 to 5 p.m. during
Community Day.
The Jane Neely 5K began more than 10
years ago as a tribute to Jane. Jane Neely was
diagnosed with postpartum cardiomyopathy
after the birth of her second son in 1985. She
received a heart transplant in 1988 and began
work as an ambassador for donation at the
Center for Organ Recovery and Education.
Neely passed away in June 2005 due
to complications from her second heart
transplant in April of that year. Proceeds from
the race its first year went to benefit the Center
for Organ Recovery and Education. In recent
years, the proceeds have benefited various
community groups, most recently raising more
than $2,000 for the Shaler Area Backpack
Initiative.
