MAKING HISTORY IN SHALER TOWNSHIP- ONE STITCH AT A TIME
On July 4, 2025, our nation will commemorate the 250th anniversary of signing the Declaration of Independence. Plans for this celebration include an exhibition featuring 13 hand embroidered panels, one for each of the original colonies. The Glenshaw Public Library, located at 1504 Butler Plank Road, Glenshaw, PA 15116, was selected to host the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania panel that honors the Freedom’ s Flag makers in the Keystone State including flag workers from both Westmoreland County and Philadelphia, who were at the forefront of the Revolution.
The left side of the panel depicts the fabrication of Westmoreland County’ s“ Don’ t Tread on Me” Flag which was flown by one of the first military units established west of the Allegheny Mountains. The right side of the panel depicts flag maker Rebecca Young as she works at fabricating a flag for the Pennsylvania Navy. Although the historical record credits Betsy Ross as the premier flag maker of the Revolution, Philadelphia has many female business owners who utilized their skills in service to the Revolution.
Raven Fagelson and Mary Ann Tyne are the Pennsylvania Co-Directors for the American Tapestry, and they conducted a search for a library that could host the tapestry. Glenshaw Public Library was selected as the“ right place to be,” according to Raven and Mary Ann. The historical library provides high ceilings and great lighting which foster great stitching. The Pittsburgh area was selected by Stefan Romero, the National Director for America’ s Tapestry, who knew what a vibrant needle arts community existed in the region and was eager to showcase the many talented hands and skills of Western Pennsylvania. The Three Rivers Chapter was approached by Stefan who began by searching for an established needlework community who may be interested in working on this historic endeavor. After speaking with the group, it was determined that there was sufficient interest in the chapter to lead the Pennsylvania panel.
Special thanks to Sandy Russell, the librarian for the Glenshaw Public Library, the Glenshaw Public Library Board of Directors for their approval and inclusion, the Three Rivers Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and Shaler Township resident Linda Hartman who recommended the library for this important project.
While many talented volunteers have already come forward to stitch the panels, a project of this magnitude requires considerable manpower. Interested Embroiderer’ s Guild of America members are encouraged to volunteer to work on this historic project. Each panel will be stitched from July 2025 to June 2026 at a historic institution within the original 13 states. All materials will be provided. For more information or if you are interested in contributing to this historical tribute, please contact americastapestry. pa @ gmail. com. The stitchers meet at the library on Thursday evenings from 5:00-9:00 pm and on Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm on the second floor of the Glenshaw Public Library. Please take a few moments to stop by during the above times to see a part of history being made right here in Shaler Township.

NEW PARK POLICY – METAL DETECTING IN TOWNSHIP PARKS
On August 12, 2025, the Shaler Township Board of Commissioners adopted a new policy for all Shaler Township Parks regarding the use of metal detectors in the parks. The reason this policy was adopted was that many visitors to the parks use metal detectors and dig into the ground when they receive a notification of something. There are several Township parks that have sprinkler systems and there is a risk of puncturing a sprinkler line or head while digging. There have been a few cases where the disturbed ground has not been replaced, causing additional work for our Parks and Recreation Crew. If you are using a metal detector in the parks, please be advised that you will be asked to stop as to not cause damage to the Township’ s infrastructure.
FREE CHILD CAR SEAT SAFETY CHECKS
Shaler EMS offers free child car seat inspections to Shaler residents. Travel statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that the risk of injury is dramatically reduced for children who are properly secured in an approved car seat. Unfortunately, over 80 % of car seats are not properly installed and 33 % of children are in the wrong type or size seat.
Shaler EMS technicians check child car seats to ensure compliance with national standards and if necessary, install a new seat at no cost. Schedule a checkup by calling 412- 487-6590 Monday through Thursday 8:00 A. M. to 4:00 P. M.
