Erin Lavelle , MD , AHN urogynecology , loves to tell her patients that urinary and fecal continence should be a human right .
“ It ’ s an honor to partner with women to improve their health in this area that has been historically stigmatized ,” she said . “ We need to think of it as a hip or knee replacement . It comes with the natural wear and tear of aging .”
As to what drew her to her specialty , she says , “ So much of surgery is removing parts . Urogynecology is reconstructive figuratively and functionally , and I love that . We have effective and minimally invasive treatments for stress incontinence and overactive bladder , from medication therapies to bulking and Botox ® injections , to sling surgery and neurostimulator implants — all with minimal downtime and recovery time .”
As for what fuels her passion , she says , “ It ’ s brave to come in for things that could be embarrassing . I ’ m happy to see women seeking care for these concerns because it really improves their quality of life .”
