Q A
What cancer trends are prevalent in southwest Pa.?
Our scientists work on research and programs focused on cancers that are more common or have worse outcomes in our area. This includes breast, prostate, colorectal, and lung cancer.
Another area connected to my work is human papillomavirus( HPV), which can cause certain types of head and neck cancers. They are becoming more common.
Why is it important to have an academic research facility at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in our region?
Because of our partnership with the University of Pittsburgh’ s world-renowned researchers, UPMC Hillman can provide specialized, high-quality cancer care while leading cutting-edge research on cancer prevention, developing innovative treatments, and offering education and training for future health care professionals. The center also actively engages with the community through outreach and awareness campaigns.
In real time, we see what the trends are, what our patients are reporting, and how things are working or not working. That can fuel our research while driving the care we provide. Partnering with researchers at Pitt who focus on the nerves, immune system, or genetics can allow us to do creative and novel work in treating cancer.
