HOME OF THE BRAVE
Recently students from Shaler Area schools have had the privilege of performing the national anthem at a number of events. Not only does this engage students in exercising their musical talents in service of the community, it empowers them to express and further foster patriotism and civic engagement.
On May 4th, the third-grade choir from Scott Primary School, under the direction of Chad Dougherty, performed the national anthem before the Pirates vs. Padres game. Celebrating“ May the fourth be with you,” fans brought extra festivity to the game, coming clad in Star-Warsthemed outfits.

Shaler Area Elementary Singers, led by Kelly West, performed the national anthem before the Pittsburgh Kids Marathon on May 3rd. Ms. West Shares,“ This is a wonderful opportunity to represent Shaler Area in our community. This is also the largest audience we perform in front of, with over 100 participating schools and over 8,500 runners. This marks the 5th year the SAES Singers have been invited to perform the National Anthem at this event!”
Students from Burchfield Primary School, under the direction of Susan Randall, performed the national anthem before the Pittsburgh Pirates took on the Atlanta Braves on May 9th. Director Susan Randall reflected,“ Since I began teaching in 2011, taking my third graders to sing the national anthem at PNC Park has been a cherished tradition. It’ s a truly special experience to create lasting musical memories together. This year’ s group was outstanding— they represented SASD with pride!”
