Crocus Project Grows Living Memorial for Students Lost During the Holocaust
This spring, crocuses bloomed outside Shaler Area Middle School, planted as part of the Crocus Project, which seeks to have a yellow crocus bloom for each of the school children who died during the Holocaust. The project originated in Ireland in 2005. Mr. Dennis Reagle, GATE teacher, shares,“ Even though it’ s been happening now for 20 years, the project still hasn’ t yet reached 20 % of its goal. That should put into perspective just how large a number it is that 1.5 million school-aged youths didn’ t survive.”
At Shaler Area Middle School, students planted crocuses along the walkway that leads up to the doors of the building by the office to represent students who would be walking into the school with a friend. haler area school district
