RYAN’ S WINGS: A DECADE OF IMPACT AND HOPE
Nearly 10 years ago, Ryan’ s Wings was founded in memory of Ryan Pappa— a Shaler graduate who lost his life to an accidental overdose. Ryan’ s story defied common stereotypes: he had a successful career, owned a home, and deeply loved his family.
Following his passing, his mother, Nancy Plavetzky, alongside fellow Shaler graduates, established Ryan’ s Wings to support individuals and families affected by substance use disorder.
Over the years, Ryan’ s Wings has adapted to the needs of the community, offering critical resources such as sober living rental assistance, transportation to rehab, job support, food, clothing and even funeral cost assistance. This year, it introduced the MACK Program( Making Activities Count for Kids), which helps families in recovery afford extracurricular activities for their children.
Nancy’ s tireless dedication recently earned her recognition from KDKA’ s Larry Richert as a Larry’ s Hometown Hero, one of five honorees celebrated at LeMont on Oct. 8. Her ability to turn personal tragedy into meaningful change has made a profound impact on the local community.
Ryan’ s Wings is entirely volunteer-run, with all funds directly supporting its mission. The organization’ s largest annual fundraiser, Rockin’ with Ryan’ s Wings Bike Run and Music Fest, takes place each summer, with this year’ s scheduled for Saturday, July 19.
The event kicks off at Harley-Davidson in Glenshaw and concludes with a lively music festival at Shriner Pavilion in Harmarville, featuring dinner and live performances from local bands. Open to all, the event has grown each year, drawing 350 to 400 attendees.

2025 KIM BAYSEK- YOUNG EXTRA MILE AWARD HONORS OUTSTANDING EDUCATORS
The Shaler Area School District’ s Kim Baysek-Young Extra Mile Award recognizes district employees who have gone above and beyond for Shaler Area students or in contributing to the success of the school district.
Members of the community nominate teachers, paraeducators, administrators and more, honoring the ways these staff members invest in student well-being. Nominations are received throughout the fall and winter and reviewed by a panel of district stakeholders.
From technology to art, this year’ s awardees showcase the many facets of education in our schools— and the people who give their all for our students.
Dr. Bryan O’ Black, superintendent of schools, shared,“ These individuals embody the pride, professionalism, and heart that are central to who we are as a community. We’ re grateful for their role in our schools and are so delighted to celebrate them.”
This year’ s awardees are:
• Lisa Anderson, paraprofessional, Shaler Area High School
• Greg DeFazio, custodian, Buildings & Grounds
• Monica McElwain, art teacher, Burchfield Primary School
• Christin Pintar, Speech & Language, SAHS / SAMS
• Steve Seidelson, Special Education, Scott Primary School
• Mitch Stivason, director of technology, Central Administration
The award, previously called the Extra Mile Award, is currently named in honor of Mrs. Baysek-Young, a beloved third grade teacher at Reserve Primary School, who passed away in 2020.
During her 22 years with Shaler Area, Baysek-Young was an integral part of multiple schoolwide programs and community events, and went to incredible lengths to provide students with educational opportunities and experiences. She received the Extra Mile Award in 2019 for her unwavering support of students.
