TOWNSHIP OF SHALER NEWS
KIWANIS PARK FOCUS GROUP
In August 2023 , a focus group of community members was appointed to review options for improvements at Kiwanis Park . The Township purchased the former Jeffery School property from the Shaler Area School District in August of 2021 for a price of $ 120,000 . This 6-acre parcel is adjacent to Kiwanis Park and the purchase was necessary to preserve much needed parking at the park as the upper lot was part of the school district property . After an initial review of Jeffery School , it was deemed by the Board of Commissioners that costs to remediate the structure along with retrofitting to the Township ’ s needs would be cost prohibitive and would not have the desired result to enhance the facilities at the park . Demolition of the school occurred in early 2023 .
In the spring of 2023 , applications from members of the community were accepted to form a focus group for analysis of future development of this property into a community asset . This focus group has met monthly for the past several months to conduct a review of existing structures and community wants and needs for consideration . The property presents many challenges , including limited parking , topography , location of infrastructure ( including sanitary sewer and water line mains ), safe ingress and egress , limited usable space , as well as location of existing facilities including Crawford Pool .
The focus group is currently in the process of putting together a comprehensive list of recommendations to present to the Shaler Township Board of Commissioners . These recommendations will include several options to enhance the community park experience . The group is taking into consideration features that they feel are essential to the continued success of the park , features that are very desirable , and also those that are on the wish list but most likely unattainable due to either limited space or costs .
Once these recommendations are finalized , cost estimates will be obtained and a final report will be issued to the Shaler Township Board of Commissioners for consideration . This report will be presented at a meeting that will be well publicized and streamed on the Township ’ s Facebook page . The report will be made available on both the Township ’ s website and Facebook page for public comment . We are hopeful that the final report will be released to the Board of Commissioners in May of 2024 with a period of four to six weeks for public comment .
The Township thanks the following members of the focus group for their commitment to this project and volunteering many hours of their personal time to make this project a success : Venice Conley , Bill Ferianc , Linda Hartman , Ellen Helfrich , Mary Loesch , David Lobosco , Maureen Macel , Shelly Niggl , Cheryl Phillips , Anne Ryan , Jenna Stand , Michael Steinmiller , Trish Shine , Henry Tomer and the facilitator of the focus group , Rachelle Wolf .
