DO YOUR PART! HELP KEEP RESERVE TOWNSHIP’ S SEWER SYSTEM HEALTHY

Never Flush“ Flushable” Wipes Even items labeled as“ flushable” do not break down in water like toilet paper. They snag on existing debris, tangle in pumping stations, and cause major plumbing headaches throughout the sewer network.
• Always dispose of these in the trash: Baby wipes, cosmetic wipes, disinfecting wipes, and paper towels.
Keep Fats, Oils, and Grease( FOG) Out
Fats, oils, and greases aren’ t just bad for arteries and waistlines; they’ re bad for sewers, too. When hot grease and cooking oils go down the sink, they cool and harden inside your pipes. This narrows the pipe diameter over time and traps other debris, leading to blockages. The picture shows a recent clog in our sewer main caused by a large accumulation of solidified grease.
• How to dispose of grease: Let it cool, scrape your pots and pans with a rubber scraper or paper towel, and throw the solidified grease in the regular trash.
Sewage Backups
Sewer backups occur when the sewer system is blocked, broken, or overwhelmed by heavy rain. FOGs, wipes, hair and other solid materials can also cause pipes to clog and backup in homes.
• Who do you contact if there is a sewage backup at your home?
Call the Township office at 412-322-1551, EXT 106 and leave a message for Public Works to determine if the problem is with the sewer main or the private lateral. Contact a plumber as soon as possible to perform the work if it is your home’ s sewer lateral.
