AREA NATIVE SERVES ABOARD NAVY WARSHIP IN MAYPORT
Petty Officer 1st Class Timothy Templin serves aboard the USS Lassen , a U . S . Navy warship operating out of Mayport , Florida . Templin graduated from Shaler Area High School in 2017 .
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Pittsburgh .
“ My hometown taught me about bluecollar work ethic and grit ,” explained Templin . “ It also taught me that you have to stay committed to get the job done .”
He joined the Navy six years ago . Today , Templin serves as a machinist ’ s mate .
“ I joined the Navy to get a better start in life and gain some life skills ,” he said . “ I also wanted to avoid the debt from going to college .”
A Navy destroyer is a multi-mission ship that can operate independently or as part of a larger group of ships at sea . The ship is equipped with tomahawk missiles , torpedoes , guns and a phalanx close-in weapons system .
More than 300 sailors serve aboard Lassen . Their jobs are highly specialized , requiring both dedication and skill . The jobs range from maintaining engines to handling weaponry along with a multitude of other assignments that keep the ship mission-ready at all times , according to Navy officials .
With 90 % of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables , Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America .
“ We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day ,” said Adm . Lisa Franchetti , chief of naval operations . “ Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs .”
Templin has many opportunities for accomplishment during military service . “ I ’ m most proud of becoming an engineering officer of the watch ,” he said . “ I am proud of that because achieving that position was the culmination of all my hard work .”
Templin serves a Navy that operates far forward , around the world and around the clock , promoting the nation ’ s prosperity and security .
“ Serving in the Navy means I can have purpose and do something meaningful ,” he explained . “ It also means helping people and having an impact on causes greater than myself .”
Templin is grateful to others for helping make his Navy career possible .
“ I would like to thank Chief Smith , Senior Chief Forbes , Lt . Cmdr . Skogerboe , my dad and my wife ,” said Templin . “ My dad taught me my work ethic and how to handle life in a respectful way , and my wife is always supportive of me .”
