Pittsburgh Sparkles with Holiday Festivities
The season officially begins with the 61st annual Light Up Night , which takes place Saturday , Nov . 19 , combining long-standing traditions and new holiday experiences with a supersized fireworks finale .
The City of Pittsburgh ’ s Tree Lighting and Zambelli Rooftop Fireworks at the City-County Building will also take place on Saturday . The 60-foot city tree features hundreds of oversized ornaments , making it the perfect holiday photo op . Additional trees will be lit throughout the city including the Highmark Christmas Tree , Sphere Tree at Market Square , trees at One Oxford Centre and the Duquesne Light Holiday Tree of Lights at Point State Park .
Also opening Friday , Nov . 18 , in Market Square , is the always popular Peoples Gas Holiday Market . Inspired by the original German Christkindlmarkts , the Holiday Market features national and local vendors housed in vintage wooden chalets selling one-of-a-kind holiday gifts and remains open until Dec . 23 .
PPG Place ’ s “ Spirit of Giving from Around the World ,” an enchanting display of life-size Santas and original paintings , captures a whole world of Christmas folklore and fantasy and will be on display through Jan . 1 . The exhibit will be located at the Two PPG Place exterior windows along Fourth Avenue . It comes alive with a collection of original paintings , each depicting holiday celebrations around the world .
Ice skating around the beautifully decorated 65-foot illuminated holiday tree at the Rink at PPG Place is a wonderful tradition . Don ’ t worry if you don ’ t make it in
the hustle and bustle of the holiday season , though ! The outdoor ice rink is open to the public Nov . 18 through Feb . 26 , with special holiday hours for Thanksgiving , Christmas and New Year ’ s .
As Buddy the Elf would say , “ The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear !” Various Pittsburgh ensembles — the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra , Pittsburgh CLO , Pittsburgh Opera , and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre to name a few — will delight your eyes and ears with concerts throughout the holiday season .
The holidays are also a perfect time to visit Phipps Conservatory , offering its “ Holiday Magic ! Winter Flower Show and Light Garden ” Nov . 18 through Jan . 8 . With a fun-filled theme of Arctic Adventure , guests are sure to be captivated by the variety of topiary creatures and amazing features .
Whether it be fun for the whole family or a romantic night out , there ’ s something for everyone this holiday season in Pittsburgh . n
