“ We always wanted to own a gym and since we took over the space at the end of October , we ’ ve added 450 new members and have more than $ 150,000 of new equipment on the way ,” Matt Mertz said . “ We have a bunch of machines from Hammer Strength , custom machines from Arsenal Strength , 10 new cardio machines , six new treadmills , two new recumbent bikes , two steppers , a new Jacob ’ s Ladder , which a lot of gyms don ’ t have . We ’ re giving our members the works .”
Some of the new Arsenal equipment Powerhouse Gym will provide includes a pendulum squat , hack squat , glute bridge and fixed T-bar to name a few . The Jacob ’ s Ladder is a low-impact , high-intensity cardio trainer that simulates perpetual climbing , like a treadmill ladder .
And while Powerhouse Gym is a mecca for hardcore gym and fitness enthusiasts , the Mertzes said they ’ ve built an environment that welcomes everyone .
“ We have Silver Sneakers here for our seniors , spin classes , yoga , MMA classes , bodyweight equipment up to competition bench presses with 180-pound dumbbells . There ’ s an aerobics room , a cardio room and a spin room ,” Matt said . “ We have more than 15,000 square feet of space here to work with , so it ’ s more than enough to accommodate everything comfortably . There ’ s
personal training available and multiple workouts . Members get one free personal training session with their sign-up .”
What ’ s more , members can enjoy all the benefits Powerhouse Gym offers for one low monthly fee of $ 29.99 . There ’ s no sign-up or cancellation fees and that monthly fee is discounted to $ 20 a month for police and first responders , and just $ 15 a month for students . Powerhouse Gym has staffed hours of Monday through Friday from 8 a . m . to 8 p . m ., and Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a . m . to 4 p . m . However , the featured key-card access makes the gym available to all members around the clock - 24 / 7 and holidays all year-round – no matter how hectic their schedules may be . Two vending machines provide healthy energy drinks and pre-mixed protein drinks like C4 , Muscletech and ABB shakes .
Matt said that either he or Lisa is onsite during normal hours .
“ It ’ s a family owned and operated business , and we treat our members like part of our family as well ,” he said . “ We support North Hills athletics , opening the gym to the wrestling team while the school was shut down . We encourage everyone to come and work out here because this really is a friendly environment .”
