FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Fifty-seven years ago, the North Hills Art Center began meeting in the homes of Ross Township residents. At that time, it was known as the North Hills Artist and Craftsmen’s Guild. Art exhibits were held in area businesses, North Park Skating Rink and new home developments while the guild looked for a building. In 1968, the group found the White Heating Company at 3432 Babcock Boulevard and started a drive to raise funds for the purchase. The North Hills Art Center opened May 16, 1969, with 352 members. Today, the center is still going strong with art classes, camps, workshops and open studios. Classes are held quarterly for all ages in painting, pottery, watercolor, drawing and jewelry. Workshops offer students a chance to experience mediums such as Zentangle, fused glass, enameling and hammered metal, to name just a few. There are also several gallery shows each year featuring both local and emerging artists.
