New Director of Athletics Joins NHSD N OR TH HI L LS SC HO OL DI STRI C T N E WS or th Hills School District D irector of Athletics Amy Scheuneman comes to North Hills from Bethel Park School District where for the past decade she oversaw the district’s athletic program including more than 150 coaches and employees. At North Hills, she is responsible for continuing North Hills’ quality interscholastic athletic programs that support the district’s educational mission. “Mrs. Scheuneman brings a wealth of athletic experience and knowledge to her new position, and I am extremely pleased to have her with us at North Hills School District,” said Dr. Patrick J. Mannarino, North Hills superintendent. “With her background of managing successful programs at numerous schools in the WPIAL and her advocacy of the value of athletics in education, Mrs. Scheuneman embodies a unique combination of skills and talents required to be a success in this significant, community-focused position.” Prior to her time at Bethel Park, she was the Director of Athletics at Avonworth School District. She was instrumental in the area’s first Your Personal Best Summit in May that encouraged girls to be strong, smart and bold through participation in athletics. During the summit, hundreds of female athletes focused on the building blocks needed for optimal health and fitness including nutrition, mental toughness, physical training, injury awareness, networking, self-confidence and empowerment. This past February, she was a featured speaker at the National Girls and Women in Sports Symposium at Robert Morris University where she spoke about Women in Sports: Leadership Roles and Challenges. Scheuneman is the president of the District 7 Athletic Directors Association and a member of the WPIAL Board of Directors and the Pennsylvania Athletic Directors Association (PSADA) Delegate Assembly. Through PSADA, she mentors new athletic directors to prepare them for future success. She has been inducted into the Plum Sports Athletic Hall of Fame, honored as the Eastern Area Interscholastic Football Officials Administrator of the Year Award and given the Extra Mile Award at Bethel Park. Scheuneman holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a major in sports management from Robert Morris University. 34 Ross Township 64 North Hills Students Named AP Scholars Two Students Earned National AP Scholar Honors A total of 64 North Hills High School seniors and recent graduates have been named AP Scholars by the College Board following their outstanding performances on the college-level Advanced Placement (AP) exams. In North Hills, 265 students took 476 AP exams in May 2016, nearly 70 percent scored 3 or above on the exams’ five-point scale earning college credit. Recent graduates Nicholas Osmond and Brendan Sieber were named National AP Scholars for earning an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more exams. This honor places these graduates among the nation’s most elite academic performers. A total of 14 students also were named AP Scholars with Distinction after receiving an average score of 3.5 or higher on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more exams. North Hills AP Scholars with Distinction are 2016 graduates Anna Aguiar-Kosicki, Alyssa Bell, Margot California, Brendan Diycz, Brandon Falcona, Sarah Glatz, Stephanie Latona, Moreen McGrath, Anna Meyer, Nicholas Osmond, Emily Ritchey, Jacob Seiler, Brendan Sieber and Andrew Toplak. 12 additional students were named AP Scholars with Honor after receiving an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken or scores of 3 or higher on four or more exams. North Hills AP Scholars with Honor are 2016 graduates Pierce Chaffin, Robert Colville, Cody Green, Colleen McCarthy, Nicole Pampena, Regan Schell and Samantha Straub and seniors Alec Duquette, Madeline Evans, Christopher Manko, Nathaniel Salopek and Kyle Swartzbaugh. A total of 36 students were named AP Scholars by receiving a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. North Hills AP Scholars are 2016 graduates Adam Averell, Jocelyn Biddle-Hill, Raymond Buehner, Calvin Chmura, Kevin Clark, Andrew Cook, Alaina Duessel, Deveron Grupp, Jaclyn Hein, Victoria Kotwica, Christopher Marchese, Chase Matvey, Evan Medfisch, Megan Rode, Hunter Ruck, Jeremy Scholze, Lauren Tucci, Kaylee Wendt, Sarah Whelan and Abdulloh Yoldoshev and seniors Kristen Collins, Sydney Dominek, Mark Faller, Brian Fulton, Brooklynn Goodworth, Anastasia July, Kaitlyn Kurz, Jamie Ley, Bridget McCole, Allina Molinaro, Matthew Reslink, Anton Sarazen, Ingrid Spear, Adam Taschner, Martin Varys and Brian Venturella. North Hills offers students 27 AP courses. These courses are in addition to the building’s 15 College in High School courses, five pre-Advanced Placement classes and 15 honors courses. Most of the nation’s colleges and universities award credit, advanced placement or both based on successful performance on the AP Exams. More than 3,200 institutions award a full year’s credit (sophomore standing) to students presenting a sufficient number of qualifying grades in the more than 30 AP exams available.
