providing a variety of languages in a four-year high school
sequence, participation in the Advancement Placement and
College in High School programs and demonstrating an extended
sequence of instruction in a commonly taught language among
many other factors.
More than half of high school students are enrolled in German,
Spanish, French or Latin foreign language classes at North Hills.
All languages are offered with the option of up to five years
of instruction capped by College in High School or Advanced
Placement courses offering the possibility of college credit.

Named Educator of the Year
orth Hills High School Principal John Kreider has been
selected as an Educator of the Year by the Challenge
Program, Inc. He was honored along with other program
award winners during the Crystal Owl Community Partner Award
Dinner on May 1 in Green Tree.
Kreider was selected as one of the program’s two educators to
be honored this year due to his enthusiasm for the program, and
his efforts to keep The Challenge Program’s mission and goals at
the forefront of students’ minds throughout the school year. The
program awarded $3,000 to North Hills students this year.
The Challenge Program, Inc. is a regional nonprofit that
partners with businesses to motivate high school students both in
and out of the classroom. The program awards financial incentives
to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors for their
achievements in five award categories: Attendance, Academic
Excellence, Academic Improvement, Community Service and
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). North Hills
High School is one of the 122 high schools participating in the
program throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio and West
Virginia this school year.
Kreider has been the high school principal since 2010 and
served as North Hills Junior High School principal from 2006
to 2010. Prior to becoming an administrator, Kreider also was a
high school math teacher at North Hills and the School District of
Lancaster.
At North Hills, he has been the driving force behind the
establishment of the Academies of North Hills. The six academic
academies offer a focused curricular track coupled with
community service and extended educational opportunities
like internships, career fairs and job shadowing along with
coursework that mirrors undergraduate classes at the collegiate
level. He also oversaw the reconfiguration of the high school
to include ninth-grade students and expanded the number of
College in High School courses available to students.
He is a member of the program’s Business/Education Advisory
Council for Allegheny County along with many professional
organizations including the National Association of Secondary
School Principals and the Pennsylvania Association of Supervision
and Curriculum Development.

he North Hills High School World Language Department
has been recognized as an exemplary high school foreign
language program and awarded a Bronze Award by the
Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association.
The high school is one of only 19 public and private
schools from across the commonwealth to be honored by the
association’s PSMLA Exemplary Program Awards. Only two
schools in Allegheny County were rated higher than North Hills in
the recognition program.
