North Hills sophomore takes 1st place at state science competition C ongratulations to North Hills High School student Hannah Sciulli on her success at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) State Competition. Hannah competed in the category of Zoology and earned a first place award for her experiment on the effects of UV radiation and the survivorship of Drosophila melanogaster, a species of fly commonly known as the fruit fly. This was her third year qualifying for states and participating in the PJAS program. North Hills seniors recognized for achievements in chemistry N orth Hills High School graduating seniors Marissa Karpinski and Cheryl Yue were recognized for their outstanding achievement at the Pittsburgh Section of the American Chemical Society and the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh’s Annual Awards Dinner on May 14. Marissa and Cheryl were among 80 students Cheryl Yue and Marissa Karpinski from western Pennsylvania chosen to participate in the Pittsburgh Section of the American Chemical Society’s 2019 Secondary School Chemistry Contest at the University of Pittsburgh. They were also selected to participate in the National ACS Olympiad Exam at Duquesne University. Cheryl and Marissa completed CHS Chemistry and Honors Chemistry, respectively, during their sophomore years and took AP Chemistry as seniors. Congratulations, ladies! North Hills Middle School teacher awarded national fellowship C Hannah Sciulli 32 ROSS TOWNSHIP ongratulations to North Hills Middle School history teacher Larry Dorenkamp who was awarded the James Madison Fellowship for Pennsylvania by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation. The $24,000 award will fund Dorenkamp’s graduate study of American history. James Madison Fellowships recognize promising and distinguished teachers while supporting their further study of American Larry Dorenkamp history. Fifty-three fellows were selected from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the nation’s island and trust territories Dorenkamp, along with middle school teacher Alexander Martinez, was also awarded a summer fellowship from the Ashbrook Center at Ashland University in Ohio. Dorenkamp and Martinez participated in a week-long graduate-level U.S. government and history course tuition-free over the summer as part of the fellowship.
