Facebook group, we decided to form the West View Historical
Society with a similar goal of sharing our local history with the
world.”
The Ross Township Historical Society page now has 8,511
members and the West View page has 5,673—and both continue
to grow daily.
The Ross Township Historical Society holds free bi-monthly
meetings, where roughly 50 people attend and a guest speaker
presents on a wide range of subjects. Due to the efforts of
member Sandy Brown, the organization has a log cabin that
was donated to the group and reassembled within Evergreen
Community Park. Along with many free public events, members
of the society are the go-to people for any questions regarding the
history of the area, even when it comes to discovering long-lost
mysteries.
Most bi-monthly meetings are held in the middle of the
month at the Ross Township Municipal Building and everything is completely open and free to the public. To attain society
membership, a $20 donation is all that is required. Membership
includes supporting the community, special member-only events
and a newsletter. The group’s Facebook page is open to the public.
“It is VERY important to have a historical society within
the community, for if we fail to learn from our history, we are
doomed to repeat it,” says Schalcosky. “I give various lectures
and talks within and beyond the community, discussing the
importance of our shared history and what it means to bring
the memories of others back to life. My favorite thing about our
area has to be the legacy that our ancestors left behind for us to
discover once again.”
