ROSS TOWNSHIP FIRE POLICE WORK WITH ROSS POLICE TO KEEP YOU SAFE
Perhaps you’ ve driven past them as they directed traffic at a motor vehicle crash. Or possibly you’ ve seen them setting up a generator to keep the heavy rush hour traffic on McKnight Road flowing during a power outage. Or maybe they’ ve steered you in the right direction at the Township’ s Community Days while they orchestrate the ballet-like dance of managing both pedestrian and vehicle traffic for the event. In any case, the Ross Township Fire Police are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to assist Police, Fire, and EMS during critical incidents.
Consolidated in 1978, the Ross Township Fire Police consists of members of the Township’ s eight Fire Companies. During major occurrences Fire Police can be summoned by Police or Fire departments through the Allegheny County Emergency Services 911 Joint Communications Center.
Once paged out, Fire Police are quick to respond from their headquarters on Cemetery Lane with whatever manpower and equipment the situation may dictate. On a typical call to assist Ross Police, the Fire Police supplement officers in traffic management and crowd control.
Working Hand in Hand Ross Township Police respond to more than 1,000 motor vehicle accidents every year, a large number of them occurring within the major throughway known as the McKnight-Siebert Corridor, and other heavily travelled roadways. With a significant number of these necessitating lane closures during the emergency, as well as the subsequent investigation, Fire Police provide the supplemental manpower needed to stabilize, close, and reroute residents and commuters.
Closures can potentially last for hours and having Fire Police on scene allows the Ross Police to conduct their investigation without interruption and retain police response capabilities throughout the rest of the township. In 2013, Fire Police responded to 291 calls for assistance. In 2007 they handled a whopping 810 calls.
