PLUM BOROUGH REPRESENTED AT FUTURE-FOCUSED LEARNING SUMMIT
In the second annual Future-Focused Learning Summit on Oct. 13 at South Fayette High School, keynote speaker Joseph T. Yun, Ph. D., of the University of Pittsburgh’ s Swanson School of Engineering was joined by representatives from area school districts including Plum. Others were from host South Fayette along with Beaver Area, East Allegheny, Elizabeth Forward, McKeesport and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, as well as representatives from Pitt and Penn State.
The event, themed“ Human Potential in the AI Era: Designing Tomorrow’ s Learning,” brought together educators, leaders and innovators from across the Pittsburgh region for a day of exploration centered on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in education.
Educators participated in sessions such as AI Foundations, Hands-On AI Workshops, Immersive Learning Design, and AI-Enhanced Leadership and Operations. Highlights included gamified workshops on data privacy, classroom applications of AI, ethical considerations, and the role of humanities in the AI age.
Following the success of its 2024 debut that drew more than 250 participants, this year’ s summit attracted an even larger audience eager to reimagine learning in the era of artificial intelligence.
PASSAVANT MEMORIAL HOMES GOLF CLASSIC RAISES $ 143K
Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation raised more than $ 143,000 at its 32nd Annual Golf Classic, held at Olde Stonewall Golf Club in Ellwood City. The funds support children and adults with intellectual disabilities, autism and behavioral health needs who are served by Passavant Memorial Homes, operating nearly 100 homes for more than 200 individuals across Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.
RED CROSS CALLS FOR VOLUNTEERS
The American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania issued an urgent call for volunteers as disaster response demands continue to grow. With volunteers making up 90 % of its workforce, the organization is seeking help to respond to both local emergencies, like home fires, and largescale disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires.
Highlights of the event included a bourbon tasting station, cookie table, photo booth, silent auction and multiple hole-in-one contests. Celina Pompeani Mathison of KDKA-TV emceed the day, and the PMHF Classic Cup went to the foursome led by Dr. Frank Makoczy of Beaver Falls.
Proceeds will enhance programs for the more than 600 individuals supported by the nonprofit across the region.
