Dear Plum Families ,
The festive winter season has arrived , presenting a myriad of opportunities for us to be charitable to our neighbors and express gratitude for all we possess .
Within the succeeding pages , you will discover some encouraging news that we are deeply appreciative of this year . This includes the improved financial health of our district , the appointment of a new Assistant Superintendent with extensive experience to share , and a generous donation from Dollar Bank supporting Rachel ’ s Challenge , an impactful anti-bullying initiative . Our district is also profoundly grateful for the service of our veterans , whom we are proud to honor this year in a historic manner .
Nevertheless , as we eagerly anticipate indulging in our beloved holiday traditions both within the educational institution and the community , there is one crucial tradition we must not overlook : being adequately prepared for unexpected delays and cancellations due to the often extreme nature of Pittsburgh ’ s winter weather .
Regarding school delays or closures , our decisions are based on the sum of available information , including the potential impact of such decisions on parents ’ schedules . Additionally , we endeavor to provide as much advance notice as possible . If your children attend schools within our district , it is imperative that we have your updated contact information on file . You can also stay informed about weather-related school updates through various media outlets , the Plum Borough School District app , and our district ’ s Facebook and Twitter pages . Furthermore , you can sign up to receive text alerts and enroll in our automated Sapphire Community Portal student information system .
For working parents of younger students , I highly recommend developing an emergency contact plan in the event you are unavailable during a school delay or closure . Discuss with family and friends and consider your options in advance so that you know whom to call or text if you require assistance . You may also consider collaborating with fellow parents from the same neighborhood or grade level who can coordinate carpools or provide workday options when necessary . While weather delays and cancellations can be challenging for families , they are more manageable when we have a plan in place .
As we prepare for the winter weather and reflect on all we are grateful for this year , I personally am immensely appreciative of the opportunity to work alongside such talented and dedicated faculty and staff here at Plum Borough School District . I am also grateful for you , our readers . As valued members of our community , you help set a positive example of what being a good neighbor entails for our students each day .
