Pelvic floor therapy at AHN .

Your pelvic floor is the “ hammock ” of muscles that support the organs in your pelvis . This foundation of muscles can be affected by a variety of things , resulting in a pelvic floor disorder .
Symptoms of pelvic floor disorder include :
• Urinary or bowel incontinence
• Frequent and urgent need to urinate
• Incomplete bladder emptying
• Constipation or diarrhea
• Painful sex
• Pelvic and abdominal pain and swelling
• Bladder , uterus , or rectal prolapse
The good news is , pelvic pain disorder is treatable .
“ 1 in 4 women have pelvic floor dysfunction that causes the muscles to not do what they are supposed to do ,” said Nicole Reilley Dosey , an AHN physical therapist . “ This could be due to pregnancy , perimenopause , menopause , or post-partum . We help strengthen or downtrain those muscles in a variety of ways .”
Options include soft tissue mobilization , bowel and bladder retraining , internal and external biofeedback , joint mobilization , myofascial release , core integration strategies , and therapeutic exercises for strength , flexibility , and relaxation .
“ 80 % of the people we see are women , because women are statistically at greater risk for pelvic floor dysfunction secondary to baby deliveries and menopause ,” said Nicole . “ But men and people going through transition can also have issues . We ’ re very inclusive regardless of how you identify .”
If you or a loved one is suffering from pelvic floor disorder symptoms , ask your doctor if pelvic floor therapy is right for you .

Looking at back pain from multiple angles .

Lara Massie , MD , may be a neurosurgeon , but she ’ s quick to say that spinal surgery isn ’ t for everyone . That premise is also the focus of her research . “ Who are the individuals who do best with certain procedures ? At least 50 % of people having back surgery are female . Not all back pain is generated by the spine . Breast size , pelvic floor strength , endometriosis , bone density , activity level , other diseases can all play a role ,” she said . “ How can we best define the right treatment for the problem ? Whether that is surgery with me , or treatment by one of our other specialists for nonsurgical sources of pain .”
