SPRING CLEANING CHECKLIST
When a home is inspected for occupancy, a residential building inspector focuses on common safety items that help ensure the home is ready to be lived in. This typically includes safe stairs and railings, accessible exits, working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and properly functioning electrical outlets. Inspectors also look for signs of water leaks, proper operation of plumbing fixtures, and heating systems that are still safely operable as seasons change. In the spring, exterior items often receive added attention, such as loose handrails, deteriorated steps or decks, drainage concerns, and general wear from winter weather. In addition, the Borough requires that house numbers be clearly visible from the street to allow emergency responders to quickly locate a residence. Addressing these common items in advance can help a home pass inspections for occupancy approval and keep you and your family safe.

The quick reference guide( QR Code) can help you determine this. Keep in mind, you may only have one accessory structure per type on your lot. Accessory structures under 200 SF require a zoning certificate to ensure compliance with the zoning ordinance. Structures over 200 SF require a building permit.
