Schoolhouse Rock LIVE Jr.
In February the Holiday Park Elementary School Drama Club presented Schoolhouse Rock LIVE Jr. in the Oblock Junior High School Auditorium. 44 years after the original series debut on Saturday morning TV, the songs were as fresh and exciting to this generation as they were to ours all those years ago.
This project began with Mrs. Jane Boyle, music teacher at Holiday Park Elementary School. Armed with only the musical leadership and the idea, she approached fellow teachers Mrs. Connie Kelly, 4th grade, and Mrs. Sarah Litz, 3rd grade, to assist with the production in the roles of director and choreographer. From there, the entire school came together to make this production possible. Teachers assisted in various ways, including photographing the cast, creating programs, finding and making costumes and props, building set pieces, coordinating stage crew, publicizing the production, selling tickets and concessions on show nights, and assisting with sound and other technical aspects of the show. This was a team effort in every way imaginable.
The 5th and 6th grade students involved in the production were pros beyond their years. They worked very hard and never complained about the hours of practice after school, even on Fridays! They even asked if we could practice more. The level of dedication shown by these young people truly inspired everyone involved. The skills they learned during this experience go far beyond the notes sung and the dance steps performed. These students learned the value of hard work; they learned how to work together and to rely on each other. They learned literacy skills. They were creative and courageous. This experience is one they will remember throughout their lives.
The Holiday Park PTA was an integral part of the success of this production. They funded the materials and license to help the fledgling drama club. They also donated the raffle ticket profits from the fall book fair. Without this monetary support, we would not have been able to get this project off the ground. It is with profound thanks that we acknowledge the Holiday Park PTA. We are also thankful to Mr. Fran Sciullo, principal at Holiday Park Elementary School for his unwavering support of this project as well. We are so fortunate to have a principal so supportive of the arts.
We are already looking forward to next year! Watch for information announcing the second production of the Holiday Park Elementary School Drama Club in spring of 2018. Until then,“ Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.”- Elphaba and Glinda, Wicked
