Golf/Life Bio: Joe likes to say that he didn’t pursue golf; golf pursued him. He was brought to the game in his 20s through his work at American Golf Corporation, where he eventually became co-president and CEO. In 2003, he formed Sequoia Golf Group, a collection of fullservice golf course ownership, management, construction and hospitality companies with more than 4,000 employees. An avid golfer with a true believer’s passion for the game, Joe makes a point of finding time, despite a 70-hour workweek, to take in a round. And whether his handicap is down to 8 or up to its current 12.5, numbers don’t dilute the “adult Disneyland” fun he has out on the course. “Golf has taught me to enjoy life more,” he says. “Golf reminds you every day that you have to pursue those things in life as you do on the course. In order to do anything really well in life, you have to have focus, passion, a very positive attitude, and you have to practice. I learn a lot about myself on the golf course, both the things that I’m happy with and the things I’d like to improve upon—like patience and temperament. It’s a powerful, real-world metaphor.” Diagnosis: Like most of us, ask Joe what he struggles with on the course, and it’s not a short answer—but consistency on the putting green is his number-one goal. “I think it has to do with my set-up and the pattern I use when addressing the ball,” he says. “I really admire people who have the level of discipline to just dial it in, execute their set-up routine and block other thoughts out. I have a tough time focusing myopically. I’m so much a multi-tasker in life, and it seems to carry over to my golf game.”
