ON COURSE ON COURSE THE WATER Planterra Ridge Golf Club Peachtree City, GA OHHHH, sk Jeff Burton about the reservoir planned to go around Planterra Ridge Golf Course, and he jokes and says, “Long, long time ago, in a kingdom far away.” In truth, he’s not that far off. Burton and lead architect, Rocky Roquemore, designed the course in 1992, and even before they built it, the land had been cleared and trees cut in preparation for a 650-acre reservoir. Roquemore’s and Burton’s design was created with the water and the water elevation in mind. The course opened two years later, but the Lake McIntosh reservoir was put on hold. Fast-forward 18 years, and as if to perfectly illustrate the concept of long-term gratification, the Fayette County Water Department got the go-ahead to open the floodgates. The result, a completely altered course—even more stunning to the eye and potentially more perilous to your golf ball budget. A This course was built in 1994, and we’ve been expecting a 650-acre reservoir to get filled in this year. It was supposed to take 12 months, but with all the rain, it took two. Now you have water on 12 or 13 holes, and it comes into play on eight of them. The scenic views will blow you away. Unlike a golf course that has some water holes, this has become one big body of water with a golf course wrapped around it.” –GARY WILDER, SEQUOIA SENIOR AGRONOMIST 64 IN PLAY, SPRING 2013 SPRING 2013, IN PLAY 65
