P
icture a wee slip of a 5-year-old, all smiles and pigtails, daintily whacking the living dickens out of a little white ball. That’s what the slack-jawed onlookers must have witnessed at the Browns Mill Golf Course in Atlanta on the day it occurred to the little girl and her dad that this golf thing just might amount to something. “My dad and I both remember that day,” says Mariah Stackhouse, now 19. “She had just come home from visiting her grandmothers, and she hadn’t touched a club in weeks,” recalls her dad, Ken. “We went over to the course and were hitting some balls, and she was really striking that ball so well. At first a couple of people were watching; then lo and behold, a lot of people were gathering around to watch this little girl hit.”
