More than 362 Pine-Richland High School seniors became
graduates on Friday, June 2. Families, friends and seniors packed the
stadium. The high school named senior Joseph Mullen as this year’s
valedictorian with senior Kendall Pomerleau as salutatorian and senior
Amanda Labuda as tertiary. More than 88% of the Class of 2017 will
study at universities and colleges in 28 states including prestigious
institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University, US Naval Academy and
another the US Military Academy West Point. This year’s class earned
more than $8 million in merit scholarships. This year’s graduation
speeches focused on gratitude of all who support students from the
time they enter the school system through graduation.
Eden Hall Upper Elementary and Wexford Elementary
schools were named to the Healthy Schools PA
High Honor Roll for meeting rigorous criteria, which
included testing for radon and drinking water as well
as starting a recycling program. Women for a Healthy
Environment Education Program Specialist Michele
Buford and Director of Community Education Chelsea
Holmes presented awards to both schools on May 23
in separate presentations. Parent Kristi Wees led the
committee at Wexford, and Assistant Principal Joseph
Domagala led the initiative at Eden Hall.
Advisor Earns National Award &
Peer-to-Peer Earns State Recognition
PRHS Peer-to-Peer Sponsor Leslie Straub, who earned the
Jefferson Awards Foundation 2017 Pittsburgh Students in Action
Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award, has earned the national
award. She will be updating us after the national conference
at the end of June. The Peer-to-Peer Students in Action Team
competed for a National Gold Banner. The team earned a state
banner for work on a difficult and sensitive topic of teen suicide.

Pine-Richland High School earned second place
at the National Robotics League Competition. Team
RAMbo was made up of seniors James Baxter, Rachel
Jarman, Ryan Schonbachler, Joshua Trant, Tanner
Zang and junior James Baxter. Sponsor Evan Clark
says the team competed against 63 other teams at the
competition, which was hosted at California University
of Pennsylvania on May 19.
