The Mussitschs had a pretty clear idea of what they wanted as far as content was concerned. They relied on Ron Clark’s decades of experience to help them develop an attractive and highly functional layout that fully utilized the available space. The wallpaper throughout the space was destined for removal. Unfortunately the home builder had failed to properly apply sizing to the walls prior to the original installation, which made subsequent removal impossible. So, the kitchen walls were stripped to the studs and the dining room walls were overlaid with quarter-inch drywall. The wall between the kitchen and the family room was reconfigured to provide an unobstructed view between the two rooms and the top of the opening was arched to provide drama to the space. Forty-two lineal feet of custom cabinetry by Schrock’s of Walnut Creek was installed around the perimeter of the room. Birch wood with raised panel square doors and drawers were coated with a custom stain and glaze combination and then subject to light distressing to give the cabinetry an “old world” patina.
