A
s we emerge from what seems like the worst
winter in decades, lengthening days and the
return of birds to my yard are evidence that
the end of the polar vortex is at hand.
But despite freezing temperatures, people in our
community were weathering the storms, fighting
snow squalls and seasonal affective disorder. Take
for instance Christopher Barraclough, who spent the
past year writing a book on the old Morganza Reform
School that we can see from I-79 as we drive past. It
was not only a reform school, but also a set for several
movies, most notably “The Silence of the Lambs.”
You can read Christopher’s story on page 44. If you’d
like to win a copy of Barraclough’s book, “Morganza:
Pennsylvania’s Reform School,” just follow us on
Twitter @ICMagazines and send us a tweet at #ICMags. Three winners will be chosen
at random.
Over at the library, staff and volunteers worked even harder to come up with events to
keep our kids engaged, including a superhero-themed day featured on page 50. The school put
on “The Wiz” for us, and our cameras were there as well. Also, be sure to read about attorney
Mary Bates’ dedication to helping the Washington City Mission on page 54. Finally, we discuss
the origins of the township’s name in an interesting and debatable “IN The Know” on page 96.
