WHAT ’ S NEWS IN PETERS TOWNSHIP
CITY MISSION ’ S CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER HONORS VETERANS
On September 11 , 2001 , City Mission ’ s chief operating officer , Brian Johansson , was director of The Bowery Mission , the third oldest Christian rescue mission in the U . S ., just 10 blocks from the World Trade Center in New York City .
On that day , he went to work . The subways stopped running , the bridges into the city shut down , and traffic backed up for miles . Determined to help during a time of crisis , Johansson found a place to park his car , and walked across the 59th Street Bridge from Queens into the city while most New Yorkers were scrambling to get out .
As a New York State Chaplain , a volunteer position he held for 15 years , Johansson helped out at Ground Zero and the Park Avenue Armory over the ensuing weeks . He prayed with families who were desperately waiting for news of their loved ones as the search through the rubble of the fallen towers continued .
This year , on Sept . 13 at City Mission ’ s weekly chapel service , Johansson commemorated the 20th anniversary of 9 / 11 by honoring veterans and telling his remarkable story . He also provided encouragement with a message from Psalm 40:1-3 – “ I cried out to the Lord , and He heard my cry . He lifted me out of the miry pit and set my feet on a rock . He gave me a firm place to stand .”

SALVATION ARMY LAUNCHES NEW COMMUNITY GARDENS THROUGH ‘ FEEDING FAMILIES FOR LIFE ’ PROGRAM
The Salvation Army Western PA Division recently launched three new
Community Gardens through its Feeding Families for Life program , which aims to make fresh , healthy food more accessible for low-income families in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods and “ food deserts .”
The gardens , funded by The Heinz Endowments , are located at the Salvation Army ’ s McKeesport , Homewood , and Pittsburgh Temple Worship and Service Centers .
“ Our brand-new Community Gardens are growing not only fresh vegetables for the individuals and families we serve , but also growing a new perspective on easy and affordable access to nutritious options ,” said Major Gregory Hartshorn , Divisional Commander , The Salvation Army Western PA Division .
The Salvation Army ’ s Feeding Families for Life : Fighting Hunger the Healthy Way initiative is more than a handout or an occasional hot meal ; it ’ s a fresh perspective on reducing hunger in healthy ways .
Through this program , the people served gain access to :
• fresh produce , lean proteins , and other healthy meal options that are regularly available in the food pantries , soup kitchens and feedings during programs .
• education on how to budget and afford healthy food choices for everyday meal planning .
In addition to increasing access to fresh produce , the Community Gardens will also provide visitors with recipe cards and meal ideas for the veggies produced , making meal planning even easier for families .
Feeding Families for Life considers the whole family , holistically inspiring and empowering each generation to not only feel full , but to also feel — and do — better . The goal of the initiative is to empower those served to be healthier by exposure to more wholesome food choices . ■
