SPONSORED CONTENT s the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, Americans have an opportunity to reflect not only on the freedoms established in 1776, but also on the economic system that helped transform a young and uncertain republic into one of the most prosperous nations in history.( The New York Stock Exchange is celebrating its 234th year.)
When our nation was founded, America was largely agricultural and economically fragile. The founders could hardly have imagined the scale of growth, innovation, and wealth creation that would emerge over the next two and a half centuries. Yet the principles they established— individual liberty, private property rights, rule of law, and economic freedom— created the foundation for entrepreneurship and opportunity unlike anywhere else in the world.
Central to that success has been the American system of free enterprise and the development of the stock market.
The stock market became one of the most powerful engines of growth in our nation’ s history by allowing businesses to raise capital from investors seeking to participate in future success. That capital helped companies expand operations, hire workers, build factories, develop technologies, and improve the overall standard of living for millions of Americans.
From the railroads of the 1800s to the automobile revolution, from aerospace and telecommunications to computers, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence, America’ s financial markets have helped fund innovations that changed not only our country, but the world. Many of the companies that shaped modern life were able to grow because investors were willing to commit long-term capital to new ideas and industries.
Over time, participation in the market expanded far beyond wealthy industrialists and financiers. Through pensions, mutual funds, IRAs, and 401( k) retirement plans, millions of working Americans became investors themselves. Today, the stock market plays an important role in helping families save for retirement, fund education, support charitable giving, and build generational wealth.
The journey, however, has never been without challenges. Our nation has endured wars, recessions, inflation, political division, financial crises, and periods of extraordinary uncertainty. The markets themselves have experienced painful downturns, including the Great Depression, the crash of 1987, the financial crisis of 2008, and the volatility surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
Yet throughout American history, one characteristic has consistently emerged: resilience.
Businesses adapted. Industries evolved. Innovation continued. Over the long term, the American economy repeatedly demonstrated an ability to recover, grow, and reinvent itself. The stock market, despite periods of volatility, has historically reflected the productivity, creativity, and determination of the American people.
In many ways, investing itself represents optimism about the future. Investors commit capital because they believe businesses will innovate, workers will remain productive, and the economy will continue moving forward. Long-term investing reflects confidence not only in companies, but also in the enduring strength of the nation itself.
As we celebrate America’ s 250th anniversary, it is important to remember that our success has never been guaranteed. It has depended upon generations of citizens willing to work hard, build businesses, invest capital, take risks, and pursue opportunities. Entrepreneurs, workers, inventors, and investors have all played a role in shaping the prosperity we enjoy today.
The challenges facing our country remain significant, including rising national debt, geopolitical tensions, technological disruption, and economic inequality. Nevertheless, history reminds us that America has repeatedly demonstrated an extraordinary ability to adapt and move forward.
The story of the American stock market is, in many respects, the story of America itself— a story of innovation, resilience, risktaking, and long-term progress. As we commemorate this historic milestone, we can take pride not only in the freedoms established by our founders, but also in the economic system that has helped generations of Americans pursue opportunity and contribute to one of the greatest engines of prosperity the world has ever known.
